I’ve been disappointed with comedy films lately. I think it’s because I work with teenagers, and most comedies (i.e. Super Bad, Borat, Blades of Glory, every parody released in the last ten years) market to everything inherently annoying in teenagers. I get the reality of it at work; why do I want to see it played to the utmost extreme on film? It just gets stupid.
I was surprised by a movie called The Amateurs recently. It’s about a guy (Jeff Bridges) down on his luck who decides to talk his small town into making an amateur porn movie. This seems to invite the opportunity to be another comedy with every joke trying to out do the last in grossness and immaturity. However, the film is nothing like that.
The subject matter is porn, but what makes it funny is how they talk about it. Yes, someone actually took the time to write a decent and intelligent comedy script. I don’t want to spoil the movie for you, but you will not see a lot of ridiculously grotesque situations. You will hear lines like “For half a dozen guys unloading on you so you look like a melted candle today we will gladly pay you on Tuesday. I don’t know who’s gonna go for that one…,” “proper porno penis,” “two girls yodeling each other on the top of a speeding train,” “visiting her back porch,” and as they review the script of their movie, “Interior office day; Boris gives it to Bianka in the butt, as she defuses the bomb.”
Maybe, I’m getting old, but that’s funny stuff.
